Why Cook?

Something that occurred to me the other day is that I occasionally have people ask me seriously, “why cook?”  After all, cooking means prep work, cleaning, following directions, and using valuable time you could be leveling in WoW.  To me, there are 5 big reasons to cook;

  • For your health
  • For your budget
  • For fun
  • For a creative outlet
  • For romantic opportunities

Recipe – Easy Yam Soup

I love making a nice big pot of soup on a lazy Sunday afternoon.  It sets you up nicely with lunch for most of the rest of the week, and is a heck of a lot healthier than fast food!  This recipe I whipped up the other day and I thought it was great.   You can forego the nutmeg and cinnamon if you like, but I think they add a nice touch of earthiness and a delightful wintry aroma.

Setting Up a New Kitchen

So you want to cook.  What do you need?  Glad you asked.  Here, I’ll give you what I consider the absolute minimum of equipment you’ll need to have or get to successfully begin cooking.  I’ll give the point form here and expand upon it below;

  • A good knife

  • A serving spoon
  • Tongs
  • Two cutting boards
  • A large and a small pot

What is this!?

What is this!?

Well, it’s a blog, obviously.  But what is it about?  Good question!  It’s about eating, cooking, healthy living, exercise, all with a potentially geeky flavour.  Don’t be surprised if tangents on unrelated stuff crops up, too.

Why!?

Why not?  Well, actually, let’s face it; as geeks (or nerds, or… whatever), we can be pretty bad about taking care of ourselves.  The image of a gamer sitting on a couch, bottle of Mountain Dew at his side, his face dusted with the remains of a bag of Cheetos is a stereotype for a reason.  My hope is that I can help by providing easy options to improve our health and diet.

I love cooking.  I love sharing my love for cooking.  I love sharing recipes, tips, tricks, and flavours.  The only reason I have cable is for the Food Network (and Glee…).  I hope I can help other people to love food and cooking, too.

Who are you!?
Well, I’m not a nutritionist or a doctor.  Or a chef.  Actually, I’m a researcher involved in eye research and stem cells.  But I’m passionate about food (and eating!) and trying to lead a healthy lifestyle.

I’m overweight (by about 30 lbs for a ‘healthy’ weight).  I recently signed up for a gym, but I know I’ve got a long way to go.  Again, hopefully this blog will help.

I’m a ‘gamer’ (though I loathe the term).  I love sci-fi, action movies, and Nerf Guns; also anything the guys at loadingreadyrun.com do.  Is that enough geek cred?

How’s this gonna work?

I’ll try and post regularly.  Sometimes big posts, sometimes small.  Some posts will just be recipes, or a summary of a workout.  Others may be ‘guides’ to doing things in the kitchen or rants of various sorts.  And odds are I’ll go off topic from time to time.

Anyways, hope you like what you see.  If you’re on Twitter, this blog’s twitter username is lrn2cookn00b.  My personal Twitter is Metcarfre.

Cheers, bon apetit, & etc.!
